Week 2 Story: Meowth v Squirtle

Ten years ago, Meowth successfully stole millions of dollars from the Pokémon Bank and built a five story mansion. In his success, Meowth got married and had two boys who he named after himself and James, Meowth Jr. and Jamie. He also let Jessie and James of Team Rocket live on the mansion so they could help him whenever needed.

One day, Meowth demanded that Jessie and James make a lake for his sons to play in during the long, hot, summer. Jessie and James of course complained that they were going to be hot and sweaty making the lake.

"I don't care Jessie and James! This is for my boys!" Meowth declared.

Meowth Jr. and Jamie. loved their lake. They swam for days and days. They also built small rafts so they can sail across the lake. However, they weren't content.

"Dad! DAD!" Screamed the boys, looking for their busy father.

"What is it sons?" As Meowth poked his head out the office.

"We want Magikarp in our lake so we can play with them!" The boys demanded.

"Then so be it." Meowth agreed and called upon Jessie and James to go catch Magikarp to put them in the lake.

Weeks go by and Meowth has noticed that his sons haven't been outside in the lake for the past few days. He questioned his sons and they told him there was something scary swimming in the lake. Meowth was worried that the Magikarp had evolved into Gyarados, so he ran outside to the lake in a panic. Only to find something else...

"A Squirtle..." Meowth said in disgust. "I want you gone! Leave the premises now or you will be killed Squirtle!" he demanded. "Jessie and James I need you here at once!"

Jessie and James arrived with their old friend Wobbuffet. They thought of and tried many different ways to kill Squirtle, but all were unsuccessful. Jessie and James final idea was to sing their old Team Rocket song in hope to scare Squirtle away.

And so, they sang (with Meowth's help of course!)

Unfortunately, the Team Rocket song was not effective! Then, Wobbuffet, who is usually useless, had the best idea! He suggested to throw Squirtle into the lake by the opening that leads to the river and sharp rocks. So, Jessie and James threw Squirtle into the lake in hopes of never seeing him again.

"He's all gone boss, no more Squirtle" Jessie and James told Meowth.
"Good. Now leave me be, I have work to do." Meowth said.

The next day, Meowth Jr. and Jamie go outside with the impression that the evil Squirtle was gone for good! They run outside, grab their rafts, and head into the water.

"Hey boys, nice lake you got here!" Squirtle said while scaring the boys.
"AAAAHHHH!!!!!" the boys scream.

Meowth panics in his office "my boys!!" Meowth runs outside and sees Squirtle on the lake fountain with the biggest, slyest, grin on his face.

"Nice to see you Meowth! I hope you don't mind I'm back. I just love to water so much, since you know, that's where I spend all my time in. If you really wanted to get rid of me, you'd put me in the forest!" Squirtle explained.

Meowth tried to swim after Squirtle, but he had no luck since Squirtle is a water Pokémon. Squirtle looked back at Meowth and said, while putting his sunglasses on, "I'll see you and the boys tomorrow!"

And so, everyday Squirtle came back. Meowth eventually gave up trying to get rid of Squirtle because the boys became friends with Squirtle!

Authors Note: This story is inspired by Ellen C. Babbitt's, Jataka Tale of The Turtle and The King. This is about a king who made a lake for his young princes to play in. One day, the King decided to tell his men to put fish in the lake. But when the young princes went out the next day they said that there was a demon in the lake. Turns out the demon was a Turtle. The King ordered his men to kill the Turtle and the old man suggested to throw the Turtle into the lake by the opening to the river. Turtle acted upset when they threw him into the lake, but then he laughed to himself since he is safe in the water.

  1. Hi Victoria,

Your story was such a clever take on the original tale. I enjoyed reading it a lot. I especially love the use of Pokemon characters. It was really nostalgic for me to read. Team Rocket is so iconic. I liked how you put your own twist to the story but tied the parallels to the original epic at the end. When I finished, I knew exactly what story you used as a frame. Overall, great work.

  2. I just want to start off by saying that I love the fact you based your story off of Pokemon. This added a huge nostalgia aspect to the story that i really enjoyed. I also really like that you added a video into your story. This made it all so interactive and it made the story come to life so much. Regardless of the dramatic change of characters and overall vibe, it was very apparent what story you used as reference.

  3. Hey Victoria, I think this take on the story of the king and the turtle is fun and unique. I like the picture of the squirtle squad. It is a cool throwback to the first season of the original Pokemon show. You really made the story your own with this cool take on it. I also like how you included a video.

  5. Hey Victoria,

Yessssss! A pokemon story! I thought it was very clever that you brought up the reason being that Meowth's two sons didn't go into the water was because maybe a Gyarados evolved form the Magikarp. I also really liked that you included all the aspects of the show and even included the Team Rocket's Theme song. I was really able to connect with the story and it made it more entertaining. I did wonder why they thought singing was the best option though. I think it would of enhanced the story a bit more if you described some of the ways that they tried to get rid of squirtle. I was a bit confused that their solution was to throw squirtle into the ocean with the rocks, but how did they do that? I did not know if they caught squirtle and if so how? It just states that he was thrown in. I did wonder what would happen to Mewoth now that his kids were friends with Squirtle. Like was he mad at his kids or maybe would not let them play with Squirtle. OR what if Squirtle took over the mansion. These are some suggestions just to think about. I thought the story was great especially from the Jakarta you based it off of.
