Week 7 Story: Mulan and Shan Yu

Its a cold, dark, and rainy morning. Enough to make them shiver and not by fear from their battle. The morning dew is settled and the mist is thick, which creates minimal visibility. The mountain side trail is narrow, causes them to be cautious of their movements.

It was now or never. Mulan needs to defeat Shan Yu, the ruthless ruler of the Huns. Defeat him for her family's honor, for the Emperor, for all of China. She knows she has to kill Shan Yu to honor the troops she lost.

Mulan unsheathes her sword and mounts Khan, her horse, and charges towards Shan Yu, who is also on his horse charging towards her. They clash swords, Mulan gets knocked off Khan and receives a large cut in her side.

Mulan tries to regain herself before Shan Yu comes back. She can't find her sword, Khan, or Mushu and Cri-Kee, her animal companions. Mulan decides to rely on her bow and arrow, a gift from her father before attending war again, but this time as a General.

Before Mulan has the chance to stand up, Shan Yu comes behind her and slashes her back, leaving Mulan wounded even more. However, this did not discourage her. Mulan, luckily finds her sword on the ground, so she gets up and runs towards Shan Yu. While running towards Shan Yu, she waves her sword around in the air to scare Shan Yu's horse. The horse becomes scared and kicks of Shan Yu, leaving him defenseless because his sword was sheathed on his horses reins. Mulan knew this is the moment. The moment the terror of The Huns was over.

"Mercy, Fa Mulan, mercy for me please!" Shan Yu begs, trying to trick Mulan in order to kill her before she kills him.

Mulan hesitates for a minute, contemplating if killing Shan Yu is worth the bloodshed. Suddenly, Mushu runs up to Mulan and starts to yell at Shan Yu.

"Where was your mercy when you killed all those families? Where was your mercy when you burned down towns and cities all across China? Was it merciful of you and those other six Huns to kill General Shang?"

The instant Mulan heard Mushu yell out General Shang's name, she snaps out of her thoughts. She loads her bow, pulls it back, aims it at Shan Yu's head, and lets go of the arrow. The arrow zooms through the air splitting the mist in half. It lands in between Shan Yu's eyes, killing him instantly.

Mulan walks up to Shan Yu's cold dead body and cuts his head off with her sword and puts it in a sack. She finds Khan and Cri-Kee, loads the head on the side of the saddle, puts Mushu in her lap, and heads home.

Authors Note: I wrote this story based off of Arjuna and Karna by Donald A. Mackenzie. In his story of the Mahabharata, Arjuna and Karna are battling on chariots. Arjuna's bow becomes undone and needs a minute to restring it. Arjuna calls out to Karna and tells him by battle rules, Karna has to give Arjuna the chance to fix his weapon. Karna didn't care and attacks Arjuna anyways, making Arjuna terribly injured. Then Karna's chariot gets stuck in the mud and it cannot move. Karna then tries to make Arjuna wait so he can get his chariot unstuck. Arjuna hesitates for a minute and Krishna starts yelling at Karna about all the wrongdoings Karna has done. This included how Karna killed Arjuna's son Abhimanyu. Once Arjuna heard Abhimanyu's name, he quickly loaded his bow and shot it at Karna's head, which ultimately shot his head off.

  1. Hey Victoria, I like that all your stories are retold as stories using characters from famous movies and TV shows. It makes them fun to read, and Mulan is a cool choice. Reimagining the battle between Arjuna and Karna as the battle between Mulan and Shan Yu is really inventive. I like the theme you’ve used for your blog stories and I look forward to reading more.

  2. Victoria,

I loved how you used a classic movie like Mulan to retell the story of the battle between Arjuna and Karna. Mulan was my one of my most favorite movies growing up. I also liked how you mentioned that Shan Yu tries to trick Mulan. In your story and the original, the motives behind wanting to kill each other were built up from past grievances. You did a great job at explaining the intent behind the battle. Good job Victoria.

  3. Victoria,

I am super jealous I didn't think of using Disney characters for my recreations first! That is incredibly creative and would have definitely made a great project. I really liked your story because I knew exactly which Indian epic you were referring to! Adding the twist to the characters made it more entertaining than the original and it definitely held my attention more. I will say I was kind of upset that Mulan killed the villain in such a gruesome way only because that seems so out of character for the Disney warrior. Overall, I think you did a really good job recreating the story, and again, I am super impressed with your creativity.

  4. This was fantastic! I knew you were using Mulan immediately but I had no idea which part of the Mahabharata you had based it off of until I got to the author's note. Not like that's a problem, just one of the thoughts I had as I was reading. I highly enjoyed the story though! I never would have thought of incorporating Mulan.

  5. Hi Victoria!

I loved that you used Mulan as the basis of your story! Mulan is one of my favorite Disney movies, so I was quite excited when I read the title. I will say thought that this story is definitely more gory than the original film (haha), but I still really enjoyed it! How did you come up with the idea to use Mulan as the foundation for the story?
