Extra Credit Reading Notes Week 12: The Hypocritical Cat

Author: W. H. D. Rouse
One day there lived a big group of Rats neat the river side in holes. While the Rats go on about their day running around, there was a Cat that noticed them. The Cat wanted to eat the Rats, but he was not strong enough to attack the Rats when they are all together. The Cat knew that most of the Rats would run away. The Cat decided to stand near the Rat holes on one leg and facing the sun. The Rats wanted to know why the Cat was doing that, so they went to the Cat and asked him what his name was and why he was standing on one leg. The Cat told the Rats that his name is Holy and told the Rats if he stood on all four legs, the earth wouldn’t be able to bear his weight. So every morning the Rats would come and greet the Cat and bow to him one by one. After all the Rats bowed to the Cat one by one, the Cat would grab the last Rat in the line and eat him. After a while the Chief of the Rats noticed that some of the Rats were missing. The Chief of the Rats couldn’t figure out why the other Rats were disappearing, but he figured he’d ask the Cat. The Next day the Chief of the Rats went to the end of the line and waited for each Rat to bow one by one to the Cat. When the bowing was all done the Cat reached out for the Chief Rat. However, the Chief Rat knew the Cats plan and yelled at the Cat and then attacked him. The other Rats heard the commotion between the Chief Rat and the Cat, so they came back to help the Chief. All the Rats feasted on the Cat.
