All of Kunti's sons had gods for their fathers and Arjuna's father was Indra. Indra saw that Karna was wearing armor and earrings that were strong and fancy. This cause Indra to worry about Arjuna's protection because Arjuna and Karna were supposed to fight each other.

Indra decided that he wanted Arjuna to be safe so he tricked Karna. It was know that Karna will worship the sun in the mornings after he bathed. This meant his armor and earrings were not on him. This created an idea for Indra to deceive Karna. Indra formed himself into a brahmin, a priest, and demanded Karna to give Indra the armor and earrings.

However, Karna was reluctant and wary of giving away his earrings and armor. Karna told the brahmin that he cannot give the brahmin the armor and earrings as it was part of him. The brahmin was not accepting the answer Karna was giving him. This let Karna realize that the brahmin was not who he said he was.

Karna started demanding that Indra should give him something in exchange for his armor and earrings. Indra gives him the dart called Vasava, which can slay a powerful foe. So Karna cuts off the armor and earrings and gave them to Indra. Indra takes the items and gives Karna the dart. Indra then flies off to Heaven, smiling and happy that Karna is no longer invincible.
