Reading Notes Week 12: The Golden Goose

Author: Ellen C. Babbitt

A long time ago there was a beautiful Goose that had golden feathers. Near the Goose lived a poor woman who had two daughters. The Goose noticed that the woman her daughters were having a hard time getting along with each other. The Goose decided that he would give them one at a time one of his golden feathers. That way the mother can sell the golden feathers for money so she and her daughters can live comfortably. The Goose flew to the poor woman house and she tells him that she has nothing to give him. The Goose said that is okay because he had something to give to her. The Goose told the woman that he is giving her a feather and then here daughters one by one. The mother and her daughters eventually sold all the feathers and they were finally able to live comfortably. The mother eventually told her daughters that they shouldn’t trust the Goose anymore in case he decided to never come back. She wanted to capture the Goose and take all his feathers. The daughters got upset with their mother. They told her that if we take the Goose’s feathers it will hurt him. The daughters refused to take the remaining feathers. The mother didn’t care, she was greedy. The next time the Goose came back she grabbed him and pulled out all his feathers. The Golden Goose was no longer golden, instead he had strange feathers. When his feathers are taken without his permission the feathers are not gold, instead they were white. His feathers never grew back golden either, they remained white. He flew away from the woman and her daughters and never came to see them.
